Great blue heron (Ardea herodias) in the Rio Nigua
Description:
Category hierarchy: Biomes | Water & Wetlands | Inland Waters
Description: This great blue heron is searching for prey in the waters of the Río Nigua near the turnpike. When the Rio Nigua is flowing there is no vegetation directly above it. When the river stops flowing the dry river bed still has alot of moisture so the brush grows. When the river starts flowing again it kills the brush that had invaded the river bottom since the last time the river flowed. The heron is seaching for food in the thicket of dead branches that were killed by the river as it reoccupies its channel. As an ephemeral river the river bottom is in a constant state of flux. The location is 17º59'15"N,66º17'40"W and the elevation is 10 m.
