Tortoise Beetle (Chelymorpha cribraria)

Image of Tortoise beetle

Description:

Tortoise beetles are relative newcomers to Florida, first recorded in Broward County after hurricane Andrew in September,1993. They are a widely distributed Neotropical species that feeds upon morning glories (including sweet potatoes). The beetle pictured lives on Munyon Island in the Lake Worth Lagoon among ocean blue morning glories (Ipomoea indica var. acuminata). There is also a fantastic color variation in Florida that is metallic gold with black dots. bugguide.net/node/view/182588
