Ramariopsis crocea

Image of Ramariopsis crocea (Pers.) Corner 1950

Description:

I decided to post a bunch of coral fungi we found last September around the Mukhrino field station, together with Nina Filippova. Nina did her best to identify our finds. They're an amazing example of convergent evolution - Ramariopsis belongs to the order Agaricales, while the very similar Ramaria is a genus in the order Gomphales. Moreover, Calocera viscosa, another branched, bright orange "coral" very similar to the Ramariopsis in this photo, belongs to the Dacrymycetes - a completely different class of fungi! It's all about the most efficient size/surface/volume ratio :)
