Species ID by size (much smaller than Eastern Gray Squirrel, behaviour (persistently in trees) and coloration (no stripes) so not ground squirrel or chipmunk), range (shouldn't be any American Red Squirrels anywhere near Tahoe) and comparison with individuals seen at closer range.
