paradoxa, plastids
Description:
Cyanophora (sigh-an-off-oar-a) paradoxa, often regarded as an enigmatic alga because it did not fall into any of the familiar groups. Photosynthesis occurs in the blue-green-colored cyanelles, endosymbiotic structures that appear to be an evolutionary intermediate between blue-green algae and chloroplasts. They cyanelles are emphasized in this image. Differential interference microscopy.
