A medium-sized or large forest tree with dark reddish-brown bark; leaves 1-3 dm. long; leaflets 4—10, ovate-lanceolate to ovate, 2.5-7 cm. long, 1.3-3.5 cm. broad, strongly inequilateral and slightly revolute at the base, sometimes nearly straight on the lower edge, acuminate at the apex, petioluled, reticulate-veined, entire, coriaceous, glabrous; panicles 6-15 cm. long; calyx 2 mm. broad, the lobes semiorbicular, rounded at the apex, minutely denticulate; corolla 8-9 mm. broad; petals oblong-obovate or obovate, 3-4 mm. long, 1.8-2.5 mm. broad; teeth of the staminal tube acuminate above the middle; ovary sessile in a cup-shaped disk; capsule ovoid, 6-10 cm. long, 4-6 cm. broad, rarely larger, rounded at the apex, long-gstalked ; seeds 5-6 cm. long, the reddish-brown wing about twice as long as the body.
Type locality: Bahama Islands.
Distribution: West Indies; southern Florida.
