Erwin Gruber commented on "Image of Polystichum aculeatum":
I may disagree this sheet to be trusted as Polystichum aculeatum (syn. P. lobatum), since it does look like true P. setiferum.

I got to disagree this sheet to show true Polystichum aculeatum, syn. P. lobatum, in fact it does look like true P. setiferum.

Erwin Gruber commented on "Image of Polystichum aculeatum":
I got to disagree this fern to be trusted as Polystichum aculeatum (L.) Roth ex Mert., since it does clearly look different. It does resemble P. setiferum in some details, still i would say it is another Polystichum sp.

Erwin Gruber commented on "Image of Polystichum aculeatum":
Trusted pro parte: Be aware, Polystichum aculeatum being to the left, P. setiferum to the right side !

Erwin Gruber commented on "Image of Polystichum aculeatum and Polystichum pycnopterum":
Got to disagree this to be trusted as Polystichum aculeatum (L.) Roth (P. aculeatum (L.) Schott. is illeg. homonym, referring to same species since having same basionym). Do not know the current accepted name for this Polystichum sp. myself.

Erwin Gruber commented on "n56_w1150":
This delineation of some Polystichum sp. or close related genus of Dryopteridaceae was titled "Polystichum aculeatum" as were many relatet species in former times. The fern from India is clearly not European P. aculeatum.

Erwin Gruber commented on "Image of Polystichum aculeatum":
This image is not appropriate for any (re-) identification, thus might better be omittet. It might show Polystichum aculeatum, but as well e.g. any cultivar of P. setiferum.

Erwin Gruber commented on "Pinnules - close-up":
Having some experience with Polystichum sp. (botanist), i may redeterminate the images of this individual to: Polystichum setiferum (Forsk.) Woynar, Soft Shield Fern. I do not see any intermediacy between P. aculeatum and P. setiferum from those images, thus i doubt it to be the hybrid Polystichum x bicknellii.
