Kim Clark commented on "Lifespan, longevity, and ageing":

When giving lifespan data, it is important to remember, especially in captive animals, that maximum lifespans, and even average lifespans, can be misleading. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is working to develop a lifespan median for captive species managed under studbooks, using studbook data. When we say, "maned wolves can live up to 16 years in captivity", and then we have one die at age 10, the assumption is that something was unusual or wrong with that animal's death. By using medians opposed to averages, you give a more realistic representation based on the relatively small sample size. For wild populations, lifespan data is also usually based on small sample sizes.
