Are any of the illustrations from Audobon's Birds of America on EOL? I tried to find some of the more famous ones, like his golden eagle painting, or american flamingo, but couldn't. The images from his book have been digitized and are available at several sites, including the Audobon society website and the University of Pittsburg, but both are copyrighted. Could either of these be added to EOL?

@Katja Schulz: Thank you all for the hints! does the information that there is a synonym for this name show on the page itself? or how did you find that out? and some completly different question. I recently started using iNaturalist.org, do the pictures i upload there show up on eol.org?

@Katja Schulz: Excellent! I will stay tuned up and wait for this tool :-) I will work at the genera I am revising (Scartelaos and Apocryptes included) as soon as it's available.

Do you have a longstanding research question, involving a large number of taxa? Do you suspect the sum of human knowledge contains enough information to provide the answer ? Maybe you’ve never tackled it because it's just way too much work to extract it from its myriad locations? Can EOL help? We need your input on this subject to inform our development priorities and resource allocation in the coming year.

Tell us the question you want to ask. Tell us the kinds of data you would need, and from where in our collections you think it could be extracted. Visit our Wishes for Research page to learn more and make a wish. Wishes will be posted publicly and priority wishes will be chosen by a vote of the EOL Curator community. The authors of the chosen wishes will be awarded their choice of soon-to-be-coveted, limited-edition EOL themed gear, with our thanks.

@Gianluca Polgar: Here's an update on the Apocryptes situation. The Scartelaos histophorus images have now been removed from the Apocryptes media collection. However, there is still a bunch of junk in there that needs to be cleaned up. Apparently, this particular problem is fairly unique and is caused by bogus synonym data introduced by a buggy data translation process. This is on our list of things to fix. Also, there will eventually be a tool to untrust synonym statements that cause these kinds of problems, but it will be a little while before this becomes available.

For now, please continue reporting these kinds of issues to the Media Collection Cleaning Crew, and we will investigate. The release of the much anticipated Taxon Concept Management tool is apparently imminent, and we are going to start plugging away at the Taxon Concept Management To Do List soon. This new tool will allow us to address problems caused by inappropriately merged homonyms, and we will also be able to merge taxa based on curators' synonym reports.

@jeff betz: Just to clarify, images don't have to be Public Domain to be usable on EOL. Most Creative Commons licenses are also acceptable so long as required attribution is included. See info on EOL Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/

@jeff betz: Looked at the Mutter Medical Museum flickr account, and they have all their photos as '© All rights reserved', so they're not available for EOL. I'd suspect that they have good reason to keep them fully copyrighted, because of the potentially sensitive personal data that applies to some of the images.

@Katja Schulz: Unfortunately, the Euro+Med Plantbase haven't got round to listing Monotropa, so the genus isn't in at all yet. From a quick look around, it appears to be an accepted species in several local / regional databases, so I'd be incined to accept it as a separate species for now.

@jeff betz: Anybody, not just curators can suggest potential content partners for EOL. Please do this in the general EOL Discussion group and be sure to provide links.

@jeff betz: Also, is there some way or place for curators to suggest photo collections or libraries that could added to EOL en masse rather than just one photo at a time. For instance the Mutter Medical Museum in Philadelphia has an online photo collection of human specimans, anatomical illustrations, etc. They like EOL also have a flickr page. Could they be invited to just add their flickr images to EOL?

@Michael Wunderli: Unfortunately a lot of pictures on the web like science photo library are not in the public domain. If you find photos that are not copyrighted (I have done this with photos from NASA for instance or the US geological survey) then download them and add them to the EOL flickr page. They will they get harvested to EOL. Hope this helps.
