@Katja Schulz: I really hope to get to the NMNH sometime this year, maybe for an ESW meeting, and meet you. I would also like to meet Torsten!

@Paul Bedell: Thanks Paul. Torsten Dikow is planning to look at the EOL Asilidae as soon as he gets settled in his new postdoc here at the Smithsonian. Hopefully he can help with some of the Australian species.

Katja, We need a curator for Australian Asilidae. There are many uncurated photos, but we need someone who is familiar with the many species they have there.

Picking up on the discussion about the trigger-happiness of the set as exemplar tool, we now have mockups for a couple of possible solutions. Please see Possible Improvements to the Set as Exemplar Tool and let us know what you think.

@Meiying Lin: Actually, the redescriptions in Zookeys also come to us, but through Plazi.org.

Jen, when you told me that zookeys publications will automatically upload to eol, I thought all taxa mentioned in zookeys would be uploaded. Recently I found that actually only new taxa published in zookeys would be uploaded. Am I right? In this case, I think I should add the old species redescribed or remarked in zookeys to eol. Right?

@Michael Wunderli: How many taxa in your collection are affected? If the number is manageable, we can solve this with our new taxon concept management tools, which should become available shortly. I have made you a manager of the Taxon Concept Management To Do List. If any of the taxa in your list were inappropriately merged with other taxa, please add these taxa to collection and then add an annotation with information on which names need to be split into separate taxon concepts. If you have any questions about this process, let's discuss them in the collection newsfeed.

I have a stock photo collection and I have focused my attention on esoteric and seldom illustrated species. Many of the species I have images of do not have any pictures yet on the EOL site. I am willing to contribute some of these images as long as I maintain rights and can put my signature on the image. To post I have to go through the flicker page right? Anything I need to know about images and rights on the EOL site?

@Katja Schulz: Hallo Katja, thanks for your help! I found the same problem with some other plants and therefor created this collection. How can i solve this, should i delete the items and replace them with the synonyms? is there a way i could do that. I also run into an other problem when i tried to add items to my collections. I have 24 collections, but when I select an item an click on add to a collection, i can only choose from about 4 of them. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that the other collections where created over the contentpartner tool.

@Michael Wunderli: Unfortunately, EOL taxon pages don't list all the synonym information our algorithm uses to create taxon concepts. Tools for the exploration of synonym relationships are on the to do list of our informatics team, but they are currently busy with other things. We have an admin tool that lets us look up all the information that goes into a taxon concept.

We are currently working on an iNaturalist to EOL image export. It should start working soon. iNaturalist will send us images from all Research Grade observations that are released under EOL compatible creative commons licenses.

@Katja Schulz: Thank you all for the hints! does the information that there is a synonym for this name show on the page itself? or how did you find that out? and some completly different question. I recently started using iNaturalist.org, do the pictures i upload there show up on eol.org?

Do you have a longstanding research question, involving a large number of taxa? Do you suspect the sum of human knowledge contains enough information to provide the answer? Maybe you’ve never tackled it because it's just way too much work to extract it from its myriad locations? Can EOL help? We need your input on this subject to inform our development priorities and resource allocation in the coming year.

Tell us the question you want to ask. Tell us the kinds of data you would need, and from where in our collections you think it could be extracted. Visit our Wishes for Research page to learn more and make a wish. Wishes will be posted publicly and priority wishes will be chosen by a vote of the EOL Curator community. The authors of the chosen wishes will be awarded their choice of soon-to-be-coveted, limited-edition EOL themed gear, with our thanks.

@Gianluca Polgar: Here's an update on the Apocryptes situation. The Scartelaos histophorus images have now been removed from the Apocryptes media collection. However, there is still a bunch of junk in there that needs to be cleaned up. Apparently, this particular problem is fairly unique and is caused by bogus synonym data introduced by a buggy data translation process. This is on our list of things to fix. Also, there will eventually be a tool to untrust synonym statements that cause these kinds of problems, but it will be a little while before this becomes available.

For now, please continue reporting these kinds of issues to the Media Collection Cleaning Crew, and we will investigate. The release of the much anticipated Taxon Concept Management tool is apparently imminent, and we are going to start plugging away at the Taxon Concept Management To Do List soon. This new tool will allow us to address problems caused by inappropriately merged homonyms, and we will also be able to merge taxa based on curators' synonym reports.

@jeff betz: Just to clarify, images don't have to be Public Domain to be usable on EOL. Most Creative Commons licenses are also acceptable so long as required attribution is included. See info on EOL Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/

@jeff betz: Looked at the Mutter Medical Museum flickr account, and they have all their photos as '© All rights reserved', so they're not available for EOL. I'd suspect that they have good reason to keep them fully copyrighted, because of the potentially sensitive personal data that applies to some of the images.
