@Cyndy Parr: Oh, fine. I set one of the decent photos from EOL as exemplar, so it will look a bit better now.

Ah, you have encountered a rare "Photosynth" which is a series of images that ought to be stitched together into a 3D rotating image. You are correct that we should be handling these better. Please ignore for now and we'll try to get a programmer to do something about it.

Here is an editorial issue, I feel. The media collection for the Harlequin Beetle, Acrocinus longimanus, is a mess. There are almost 300 images, most of them repetitive detail shots of specimens, and also low resolution images of specimen trays. Unless there is some curatorial/research purpose for these that I do not understand , almost the whole lot needs to be hidden so that the few useful images can be browsed. This would take a curator a very long time to do individually. Is there any way an administrator/programmer can do this in some sort of batch process? To me, the volume of media there really detracts from the species account. (Again, unless there is some documentary purpose for these images that is not obvious to me.)

Folks, I want to apologize for those of you who are trying to change your notification settings so you don't get so many messages from this discussion group or EOL in general. The password reset mail is often caught in spam filters and we're working to try to fix that. In the meantime, please use the "Contact us" link at the bottom of the page to send a message relating to Membership and Registration and we'll be happy to adjust things for you.

@Jennifer Hammock: That looks like an aquarium picture. Do we want captive associations here?

@Michаel Frаnkis: It looks like Wikimedia Commons was last harvested on 3 July. Usually it gets refreshed more frequently, but I know it's a tricky harvest that often needs manual intervention. Our content important team is currently short-handed and in the middle of a big project with global partners. So it's possible that harvesting of complicated resources is a little slower than usual.

    Problems with Wiki Commons harvest?

There's been no new harvest of pics from Wiki Commons since 21 June; pics added to Commons pages on 22 June and subsequently have not appeared here yet. Is there a particular known problem causing this?

Just to clarify things for people who are not familiar with all those abbreviations: CC refers to creative commons licenses, which are required for all EOL content that is not in the public domain; NC refers to the non-commercial restriction which is compatible with the EOL licensing policy; ND refers to the no derivatives restriction, which prevents others from re-using the content in the creation of new, related works. The ND restriction is not compatible with the EOL licensing policy. All creative commons licenses require attribution, so credit for the creator of the original work is always assured.

@Robert Guralnick: NC is allowed (for better or worse), but ND is not.

Cyndy Parr commented on "EOL Curators":

For EOL it has to be unrestricted for derivative use, so if the CC license has "ND" in it then I'm afraid we can't use it. All other CC licenses are okay.

@Cyndy Parr: Thanks, Cyndy I may have to resort to that. It looked to me, though, like the license was already fine for non-commercial use. I'm still figuring out the differences between all of these license types.

@Maggie Whitson: If you contact the photographers and invite them to change the licenses to one of those that EOL accepts, they could let CalPhotos know and then the photos can come over in the weekly update. But it might be a long shot.
