John P. Sullivan commented on "Scratchpads Community":

Boy, things have been quiet on here. Back in 2011 when it was announced that EOL would stop developing the LifeDesk platform, those of us who were putting hours and hours into our LifeDesks were assured that we wouldn't be left high and dry because a system would be developed to port LifeDesks into Scratchpads. Has that initiative been abandoned? Was that responsibility just dumped upon the Scratchpad people? Seems like we *were* left high and dry as I had feared. I maintain both a v.2 Scratchpad and LifeDesk. Both have their particular strengths and unique capabilities. I can say unequivocally that I do not want to see my Lifedesk ported to a Scratchpad. What I'd like is LifeDesks support and development to be reinitiated. Sorry to see EOL attracting funding for new initiatives like TraitBank while leaving what was in my opinion one of its most promising initiatives to languish. I like my LifeDesk in many respects better than the Scratchpad, particularly in the layout of the species pages, tagging content with taxonomic names via the pop-up window and intuitiveness of the interface. It's also a hell of a lot speedier than the new Scratchpads. LifeDesks came very close to being a perfect platform for a lot of us: a stand-alone site that can be used by specialists and the public alike, a great way to organize taxonomic information and to get content into EOL. I am very unhappy with EOL for abandoning LifeDesks. Who's with me here?

@Michаel Frаnkis: Michael -- Curators should use the hide link to hide data records that are incorrect (comment explaining will be helpful; the record will be grayed out for curators but not visible to non-curators).

You can also promote or remove items from the overview tab (for example, if something occurs in a habitat only rarely, that habitat is not a good one for the overview). Also we've already started to think about the need to re-label terms to be more taxon specific -- we'll certainly be looking for input about the best way to do this. As for spelling variants within English, for that we'd have to allow users to set a preference for one or the other.

"EOL has data for ... traits" Is this new feature editable for curators? There are times where the grouping terms are not appropriate for the taxon concerned, such as 'flower' and 'fruit' for Gymnosperms (should be 'strobili' or 'cones'), or 'color' for European, Australian, etc. taxa (should be 'colour'), and other cases where the datum given is incorrect (e.g. for Pinus albicaulis cones, 'brown' should be 'purple') or is missing and could be added.

Update: I've just made available a facility for searching EoL for media of a specific type, at http://yanwong.me/EOLimagesearch.cgi. Using it to look for public domain images of beetles throws up a number of cases of bad classification, of which the two I mentioned are just a selection. Have a look at http://yanwong.me/EOLimagesearch.cgi?search=beetles&numberofitems=75&mediatype=images&licence=pd

@René Malenfant: Thanks René. I notice that even if the preferred classification is changed, the picture still shows up when, e.g. searching the pages API for beetles (the guitar fish picture, ID 19675473 is about halfway down the results returned from http://eol.org/api/pages/1.0/345.xml?images=75&videos=0&sounds=0&maps=0&text=0&iucn=false&subjects=&licenses=pd . Is there a way of marking the classification as untrusted? Or telling the pages API to only use the preferred classification?

Why are these http://eol.org/pages/76717/overview http://eol.org/pages/50092/overview listed as beetles?

Yan Wong commented on "Retag as map type":

There's a current issue with the wikimedia harvester which means even a correctly tagged map on Commons may not be correctly identified by EoL (this includes one of the two images that Cyndy just tagged). I have a fix waiting to be accepted by the EoL maintainers: until that comes through, don't spend too much extra effort adding items to this collection, as many may be picked up automatically. When it comes though, I'll change the description of this collection to indicate how wikimedia maps can be correctly tagged.

Do we have any botanists or naturalists familiar with Cassia grandis? Some of the best photos on this page are not yet trusted: http://eol.org/pages/704140/worklist

@Luis Alessandro Guariento: You'll need to get them into one of the sources we harvest from. For example, a scientific database or Wikipedia. Other ways are to start a Scratchpad (scratchpads.eu, good if you think you'll want to do lots of species) or contribute to http://eolinterns.lifedesks.org/ .

Hi! I'm an assistant curator, this is my first post here. I've noticed that some species of my interest (Scorpiones) are missing. How can I add new taxa, recently described?

@Jason Sharp: The forums seem to have settled down now. But the newly cropped images (e.g. http://eol.org/data_objects/26844563) are still not showing up. You're right about waiting: I'll see if they've turned up by tomorrow.
