@Yan Wong: Might be easier to ask NOAA to change their photostream to allow others to tag (one blanket change). Then EOL could just set up a harvest from their photostream of anything that is taxo-tagged. If they are willing to open up to tagging in general.

@Yan Wong: That would be good, though I fear that - because of cuts in funding - NOAA probably don't have anyone who can spare the time to add the relevant photos to the EoL Group. If they blanket-added everything in their photostream to the EoL Group, we'd be left wading through hundreds (? thousands) of irrelevant photos (like this) of no use to us. Tricky!

@Cyndy Parr: If that's true, NOAA need only add their pics to the EOL flickr group (presumably easy) and others in the group can tag them if necessary?

@Yan Wong: I think you can add taxonomic tags to images in the EOL Flickr group if you are an admin of the group. Or, if the owner of the image has allowed others to (generally) add tags to their images.

@Jennifer Hammock: Thanks. Shame that Flickr doesn't allow others to taxo-tag for you, I guess, otherwise we could get volunteers on the task

@Yan Wong: Bob is right, Yan- the rate determining step is to get names on the media. We've talked with NOAA contacts a few times about content and we have some fabulous images from the Gulf of Mexico thanks to them. But they tend to be busy, so things like taxon annotations can be asking a lot.

@Michаel Frаnkis: Thanks Michael. I guess the ID is pretty trustworthy, if they provide one

@Bob Corrigan: Yep, I was thinking is someone at NOAA would be willing to tag them, it would be an easy win.

I've uploaded a couple to Commons as starters (for ones where I knew the species name); I didn't get any 'already at commons' warning, so (at least the newer ones) aren't in general on yet:

@Yan Wong: The other option would be to add them all to wiki commons, the license is suitable. But they'd need identifying and adding to their respective named categories.

@Yan Wong: Not to my knowledge - the licenses on the photos is good (CC BY) but the naming is spotty. There is no name on the purple anemone, but there is one for the Redeye Gaper (https://www.flickr.com/photos/noaaphotolib/14526200623/). Jen and Katja will have more to say on this. Now, if we could get someone at NOAA to add names...

Some of these are amazing: https://www.flickr.com/photos/noaaphotolib/, has anyone chatted to NOAA to see if they will taxotag them and add them to the EoL group?

@Yan Wong: I think the only image subtype our system currently understands is Map. We really should have a Label subtype or the more general ScannedText. I will submit a ticket. Until we can implement this on our side, it would be great if you could downrate such images in the resource.

For things like this http://eol.org/data_objects/20084544 should we have a "data" subtype, akin to the "map" subtype for images? Should I just downrate them to 1 star?

Michаel Frаnkis commented on "EOL Curators":

@Yan Wong: Re that habitat photo - that one's tricky, as none of the listed taxa are visible in the photo. So it has to be taken on trust that they are present there, it can't be independently verified. Normally I'd give habitat photos a fairly high mark if the taxon is visible in it (more important than e.g. garden or zoo portraits, which aren't natural), but in this case, a lower rating is probably better.

@Yan Wong: Hi Yan - re Sisymbrium loeselii, I'll take a look, but it isn't a species I'm hugely familiar with so I'll need to read up a bit before I do.

@Katja Schulz: Thanks. I've put a comment about how to do it in http://eol.org/info/curate_wiki, and also in subtext in the instructions at the top of http://eol.org/collections/23389. Hopefully people will spot it there. I also have a script which I run intermittently that goes through http://eol.org/collections/23389 and identifies which are WikiCommons maps that need correct classifying, and also removes maps that are now correctly tagged. I've been responsible for reducing the size of that collection by about half, I think.
