I am a Computer Scientist by training and have always been fascinated by the intersection of Computer Science and Biological Sciences. Biodiversity Informatics turned out to be the field where I have been able to develop interdisciplinary work, to constantly learn and enjoy the wonderful algorithmic beauty of biological systems, and to have an impact on the conservation of the biodiversity of the planet.
I am a professor at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. Prior to that I served as the Executive Director of the Encyclopedia of Life, and also worked for over 15 years at INBio, The National Biodiversity Institute of Costa Rica.
