@Priscila Chaverri: It depends on the particular case. If the current name is represented in one of the classifications in the Names tab, you can change the name of the taxon page by selecting that classification as the preferred one. If the current name is on another EOL page, the pages need to be merged. Please put them on the Taxon Concept Management To Do List.

If there are problems with the nomenclature in EoL, how can we fix that? For example, there are some names in Fungi that are not current even when Index Fungorum is using the current ones.

@Maggie Whitson: There's no way to edit the image descriptions on EOL. You can only leave a comment, but that text isn't considered in searches. I have had good luck in using EOL comments to ask the image owners to add information to their image descriptions, e.g., if the location was missing. Also, in the case of Wikimedia Commons images, you can use the View Source link to go to the image page on the Wikimedia Commons site where you can then edit the description. The revised description will then be imported to EOL with the next Wikimedia Commons data harvest.

Is there any way for curators to edit the descriptions of images? I've seen a lot of neat images showing particular traits of the organisms that won't come up if you search for that trait because the image was not submitted with a description. Any inofrmation would be appreciated.

Dear Scratchpad users, Just to note that we've been working on the image metadata schema, mapping the more stable elements of the proposed Audubon Core standard to the Darwin Core and EOL schema. This work is done, and when its released means Scratchpads will support a much richer image metadata schema, which will also be exposed in each Scratchpad Darwin Core Archive. We are now working on reading this metadata from image EXIF headers so that you can add these metadata offline to your images, then just upload the images to the site with the metadata. This won't suit all users but will help those dealing with large numbers of images. We plan to release this to a subsection of the Scratchpads in November, and subject to successful testing will be released to all, shortly thereafter.

Hi all Scratchpaders. Eli, this is mostly a question for you, since you seem to have figured it out, but responses from anybody else will be appreciated: I've been waiting for the batch-upload feature for metadata for images. The ScratchPads developers say: "This feature is now available on your site under the import section (an additional template can be downloaded for each import which contains the values already present on your site)." What import section is meant? It seems to be disabled for Media Gallery. When I try to go through the Taxon Description upload, the template file doesn't have any relevant headers. Any more information about this? Thanks! Jiri

@Quentin Groom: Quentin is correct. To share images with EOL, projects need to (1) support creative commons licenses and (2) make their data available in a format that can be harvested by EOL. iNaturalist is the first nature observation project to accomplish this, but we hope others will follow.

@Kent McFarland: I posted a message about the iNaturalist image sharing to our flickr group discussion a month ago. The main advantage of iNaturalist over Flickr is that you can get your identifications vetted by the iNaturalist community. EOL harvests only images associated with Research Grade iNat observations, and these photos come in as trusted rather than the unreviewed default for flickr. iNat also reports their Research Grade observations to GBIF. However, EOL does not yet map the location information associated with either flickr or iNat observations. That's on our list of things to implement in the future.

@Kent McFarland: I've not tried inaturalist, but if it is free, one advantage over Flickr would be that image resolution wouldn't be lost if the uploader stops paying. At present, if a Flickr subscriber ceases to have a Pro account, their images thereafter only show thumbnail size, not full size. A lot of high quality pics have been lost from EOL because of this.

Its not clear to me how iNaturalist submissions show up on EOL. If I enter a photo of a Xylocopa virginica on iNaturalist, will it be part of that species account on EOL? Slightly confused here. In other words, instead of just putting photos into Flickr and sharing with EOL group there, is it actually better to go through iNaturalist and then the photo as well as the record location will be shared? And, will or is all this shared with GBIF? I searched around to see if there was information on this, so if I missed it, please just point me to the material so you don't have to waste time on this. Thanks everyone.

@Michael Wunderli: Where would you want to show it? On your EOL profile page? I don't think iNaturalist provides a widget for your life list. That would be very big for most people. But they do have one for a sample of your observations, e.g., your most recent observations. I tried to add this to my EOL profile page, but sadly, it didn't work. There must be some code in the widget that's currently disallowed on EOL profile pages. I agree that it would be great to enable this and other widgets from related sites, but it will probably be a while before our development team would have the time to tackle this task.
