Matthew Murphy commented on an older version of Sargento (Agelasticus thilius petersii) - Macho:
I wasn't sure what kind of rating to give this image. Although the animal shown is in the context of its environment, and the author shows an excellent sense of composition, the major diagnostic feature (the nearly-hidden yellow epaulet) is very small.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Yellow Hooded Blackbird Female.jpg":
The diagnostic features here are the individual's yellow throat (barely visible) and olive-black head. These features do not occur at all in yellow-hooded blackbirds.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Yellow Hooded Blackbird Female.jpg":
This image appears to be of an adult female unicolored blackbird (Agelaius cyanopus), rather than a yellow-hooded blackbird.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Quiscalus Quiscula June 2008.JPG":
It is unclear which species of grackle this photograph is showing. Although the information bar lists it as a 'common grackle', features that would distinguish it from related species (quality and extent of iridescence, shape and organization of retrices) are absent from the photograph. In light of this, I am giving this photo an 'untrusted' designation.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on an older version of File:Quiscalus Quiscula June 2009.ogg:
Nearly impossible to tell what the photograph is of.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Agelasticus thilius Salvez1.jpg":
The subject in question is a tawny-shouldered blackbird, not a yellow-shouldered blackbird. The two species exploit similar niches and are very similar in appearance. They may be distinguished in the following manner: tawny-shouldered blackbirds have orangish epaulets, while yellow-shouldered blackbirds have yellow epaulets.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Agelasticus thilius Salvez2.jpg":
This photograph is of a tawny-shouldered blackbird (Agelaius humeralis). Tawny-shouldered blackbirds are characterized by orange epaulets (as opposed to yellow-shouldered blackbirds' yellow epaulets).
-
Matthew Murphy commented on an older version of stamp cuba 1986 Agelaius assimilis Bird Vogel Mayito de la Cienaga Red-shouldered Blackbird Kuba-Rotschulterstärling:
Although the illustration approximates the plumage of a red-shouldered blackbird, it is more similar to the plumage of the red-winged blackbird.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "Redwing_sunrise_May28_©DaveSpier_0781-35R":
Although the silhouette looks correct for this species, the image contains no definitive diagnostic information.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Agelaius phoeniceus 0110.JPG":
Excellent-quality image, but there is a larger version of the same individual already uploaded to EOL.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on "File:Red-winged blackbird and turkey vulture 4014.jpg":
Although the species are identified correctly, the largest animal in the image is not the intended subject. Furthermore, it is difficult to easily tell that the smaller animal is of the indicated species.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on an older version of File:Blackbird-sunset-03.jpg:
Birds are silhouetted against a setting sun, making it impossible for the reader to determine the species.
-
Matthew Murphy commented on an older version of Audubon's Oriole (Icterus graduacauda):
The yellow back and ragged throat patch characteristic of Audubon's orioles are barely visible in this photograph.
