Michael Mincarone (“Mike”) was born in Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Oceanography from the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (Itajaí, SC) and his PhD in Zoology from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, RS). Part of his PhD was conducted in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), and California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco, CA). Currently, Mike is Professor of Zoology at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and curator of the NUPEM Fish Collection. At the beginning of his career Mike focused on the systematics of hagfishes (Myxiniformes), but his current research includes the systematics and conservation of many other deep-sea fish groups.
