Just wanted to say: as someone who is already heavily invested in both platforms, please keep me in the loop with developments regarding the eventual porting of Lifedesks into Scratchpads! I've already been giving the Scratchpad developers a lot of my feedback. I've really been impressed with their dedication and the great job they're doing.

@Eli Sarnat: re: blog/forum/etc. Thanks for trying. I think I just need to get these tools enabled. They're set to Off in my Tools menu and I can't re-set anything in there right now. I did try adding the url as a tab manually but that just creates a flat content page. Curses!

@Eli Sarnat: That sounds promising, and poking around, your records look pretty good apart from journal titles, which just have a display issue. You were supposed to get taxon links automatically though, from Title and keyword content to anything that was recognized in your classification, which it looks like you didn't. Rats...

@Jennifer Hammock: RE: literature records. I just exported a few dozen Endnote citations into xml, then imported them using the 'Biblio import' link into the website. It took all of 1 minute. I haven't really dug in to see how well the fields were parsed, but the display and faceted search are quite nice.

@Jennifer Hammock: RE: forum, blog and specimen tools. I wish I could remember all the steps I took to get these working! One thing is that I think you need to actually produce content for each of these types (i.e. forum topic, blog entry, specimen record/observation) before they will show up as tabs on the main menu. So step 1: Home>Content>click the 'add' link in the row of the content type you want. This may or may not automatically add the respective tab to your main menu. If it doesn't...Step 2: Structure>Menu>Main Menu>list links. If the link (Forum, Blog, Specimens) shows up, make sure the 'enabled' box is checked. If not...Step 3: Structure>Menu>Main Menu>add link. Type in the URL to the node (tab) you want added to your main menu (http://yoursitename/forum or /blog or /specimen_observation. I'm sure there are easier ways to do this, but I think that might work. Let me know if any of that works, and I'm happy to try and help troubleshoot if the vibrant team is too swamped.

@Eli Sarnat: I see you've got access to forum, blog and specimen tools. Humph. I inquired of the Vibrant team about why I don't, but did you take some clever steps to activate them that differ from the wiki instructions? Also curious- what have you used for literature? The one I added manually is fine, but the one I tried via their spreadsheet upload seems to have gotten crunched. I haven't tried Bibtex or Endnote. I see those are supposed to autotag refs with taxon names but there are bug reports about it.

@Eli Sarnat: Oops! There's a bit of a zombie issue right now with deleted communities but as soon as it's fixed, restoring the community should be easy; stand by for that. The Scratchpad I've been training on is http://eolhotlist.myspecies.info/. If anyone would like an account to play with but isn't ready to create a whole new Scratchpad, let me know; you're welcome on mine!

@Jennifer Hammock: Hey Jen, regarding the mb limit, I agree it is on the smaller side. I recently had success shrinking video files by running it through Windows Movie Maker, as described in the following wiki help: http://www.wikihow.com/Reduce-Video-Size. That post looks like it has an iMovie alternative for mac users.

@Eli Sarnat: Hello, Scratchpadians. What does everyone else think of the 50Mb limit on media files? This has made me aware how limited I am by my little vidcam which saves in .avi (aka: enormous). Can anyone suggest a no frills video editing program for people who just want to change format?
