@Scott Loarie: Hi Scott & Cyndy, thanks for this, from my side no need to rush as it seems to involve a bunch of issues. First of all, I definitely do not want to get rid of all the taxonomic changes & additions we've added over the last months on iNat, especially as these are nicely referenced and documented. Second, most of the discrepancies stem from different usage/definition of genera, e.g. all African Chalinolobus on EOL should be Glauconycteris (large consensus in the recent taxonomic & phylogenetic literature). On iNat, we're currently sticking to the broadly defined genera Pipistrellus s.l. (rather than split into Pipistrellus s.s., Neoromicia, Hypsugo etc,), and similarly to Tadarida s.l. rather than Tadarida s.s., Chaerephon and Mops since the generic definitions are likely to change in due course (actually working on a revision of a paper....). Third, I'm working on a phylogeny of all African taxa, which is available through the AfriBats Lifedesk site. I could align this taxonomy with iNat's taxonomy, and if the Lifedesk taxonomy gets imported into EOL, set this as the preferred taxonomy for African taxa on EOL. Let me know if this is a sensible approach. Some of the strange taxa that Scott mentioned originate from GenBank where taxa have been submitted with these abbreviations before they were formally described. All in all quite a mess, requiring a lot of cleaning and mapping the synonymies, but I think we shouldn't rush this but come up with a solution that minimizes curatorial work, wherever this is best accomplished. Cheers, Jakob

@Cyndy Parr: Hi guys, the iNat Afribats checklist has 288 sp & spp: http://www.inaturalist.org/lists/57284-AfriBatss-Check-List The EOL Afribats list has 281: http://www.inaturalist.org/lists/86723-AfriBats-EOL-Collections-Check-List We can hook these together, but this means the EOL list will be the master so it will delete these taxa that are only on the iNat list: Asellia italosomalica Coleura kibomalandy Glauconycteris beatrix Glauconycteris variegata Miniopterus aelleni Miniopterus brachytragos Miniopterus egeri Miniopterus mahafaliensis Mormopterus francoismoutoui Myonycteris angolensis Myotis anjouanensis Paratriaenops pauliani Paremballonura atrata Paremballonura tiavato Pipistrellus lanzai Pipistrellus robertsi Pipistrellus roseveari Pteropus seychellensis Rhinolophus cohenae Rhinolophus mabuensis Rhinolophus mossambicus Rhinolophus smithersi Rhinopoma cystops Stenonycteris lanosus Tadarida atsinanana Tadarida bakarii It will also add these which aren't on the iNat list: Chalinolobus beatrix Chalinolobus beatrix humeralis Chalinolobus variegatus Chalinolobus variegatus machadoi Emballonura atrata Emballonura tiavato Eptesicus malagasyensis Miniopterus s Mormopterus s Neoromicia malagasyensis Neoromicia nanus minusculus Neoromicia somalicus ugandae Pipistrellus nanus helios Plerotes anchietai Rhinolophus c Rousettus angolensis Rousettus lanosus Triaenops pauliani Triaenops persicus The upside of this is Jakob can just manage the list on EOL and it will keep the iNat list in sync - the downside is someone adds an observation of something not on the synced list, each night when EOL and iNat sync it will delete the missing taxon from the list and kick any obs attached to that taxon from the project - should we link them? A couple other weird things I noticed, iNat thinks the species names for these Miniopterus s, Mormopterus s & Rhinolophus c are s and c. iNat is currently using Pipistrellus somalicus instead of Neoromicia somalicus, so if you want Neoromicia somalicus ugandae as in the EOL list you should curate those taxa on iNat. Also Myotis welwitschii came through EOL as "myotis welwitschii"
