@Yan Wong: I think the only image subtype our system currently understands is Map. We really should have a Label subtype or the more general ScannedText. I will submit a ticket. Until we can implement this on our side, it would be great if you could downrate such images in the resource.

For things like this http://eol.org/data_objects/20084544 should we have a "data" subtype, akin to the "map" subtype for images? Should I just downrate them to 1 star?

@Yan Wong: Re that habitat photo - that one's tricky, as none of the listed taxa are visible in the photo. So it has to be taken on trust that they are present there, it can't be independently verified. Normally I'd give habitat photos a fairly high mark if the taxon is visible in it (more important than e.g. garden or zoo portraits, which aren't natural), but in this case, a lower rating is probably better.

@Yan Wong: Hi Yan - re Sisymbrium loeselii, I'll take a look, but it isn't a species I'm hugely familiar with so I'll need to read up a bit before I do.

@Katja Schulz: Thanks. I've put a comment about how to do it in http://eol.org/info/curate_wiki, and also in subtext in the instructions at the top of http://eol.org/collections/23389. Hopefully people will spot it there. I also have a script which I run intermittently that goes through http://eol.org/collections/23389 and identifies which are WikiCommons maps that need correct classifying, and also removes maps that are now correctly tagged. I've been responsible for reducing the size of that collection by about half, I think.

@Yan Wong: Awesome! Here are a couple of them in a maps tab: http://eol.org/pages/323883/maps I have to admit that I had not noticed this before. This is great progress!

@Katja Schulz: OK, thanks. I guess there's an argument to have a different subtype for these sort of things, but that might be a pain to implement.

Yan Wong commented on "EOL Curators":

@Katja Schulz: I can answer that: my code gives a wikimedia commons image file a subtype "map" if it is categorised in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Distributional_maps_of_organisms or any subcategory thereof (as established by http://tools.wmflabs.org/catscan2/catscan2.php), which currently includes 1094 categories. There might be an argument to extend this to all children of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Biogeographical_maps, which would extend it a little to 1174 categories (included e.g. Category:wine_maps_of_Loire)

@Michаel Frаnkis: Do the Wikimedia Commons maps come in as images with subtype map? Yan should be able to answer that question.

@Yan Wong: It's a habitat photo and as such extremely useful. But it's probably a good idea to give habitat photos a lower rating in general. We want them in the media collection, but we don't want them to show as exemplars.

Hi, can you verify the ID on any of these http://eol.org/pages/583772/media?page=3 since at the moment the only trusted pictures are herbarium specimens

Finding a lot of images with this message:

The association to Xxxxxx xxxxxx cannot be curated because it is being previewed after a harvest.

Anything that can be done with them, other than wait a few days and Try to remember to revisit?

@Michаel Frаnkis: Thanks for checking. In fact, I actually meant the php code in the Wikimedia Harvester (much of which I re-wrote). It could be that the harvester caught the file when the wikimedia dump (used in the 1st pass of the harvester) had the file classified under the genetic category, but the online page (via the wiki API which is accessed in the 2nd part of the harvester) had changed to the more specific one. So Katja is right - waiting for the next harvest seems sensible.

@Yan Wong: Can't see anything wrong with your edit at Commons; the only thing I can think of is adding the map category has put it in a queue to reappear in the map section of Diplobatis colombiensis (though it isn't there yet) rather than in the pics section.

Katja Schulz commented on "EOL Curators":

@Yan Wong: hm, that is strange. It looks like it was unpublished as soon as it was harvested. This may be a fundamental problem in the way we handle images that have their taxon name changed at the source. I don't think it's universal though since I have seen this work fine for other resources. It may be a problem specific to the Wikimedia Commons resource. I would give it another harvest to see if it fixes itself.

Just looking at wrongly tagged maps, and wondered why this image is now "unpublished" http://eol.org/data_objects/27238509, since it is still up on Wikimedia Commons (albeit with a changed species ID)
