Alan Couch commented on "Discover Life: Point Map of Sarcophilus harrisii":
Just for clarity: S. harrisii is not native to North America. Zoo animals should not be recorded as locations. Similarly it is not native on mainland Australia anymore. While it used to be on the mainland, and there are some discussions about reintroducing it as a potential protection against extinction because of Devil facial tumor disease. It is currently only extant in Tasmania.

@Jamie McMillan: http://www.gbif.org/ is probably what you are after. Or http://www.ala.org.au/ for the Australian stuff :-)

I think it is great to have have the community newsfeed within EoL domain now!

Thanks Bob - actually I think they had been dropped from the Flickr EoL group by some glitch. There is more to come for this species. Cheers

Alan Couch commented on Alan Couch's newsfeed:
I notice the mapping facility in Flickr does not have very fine resolution and worry this will lead to degrading the value of the user added geodata. For example it would be possible - likely even - to place aquatic animals from a pond for example on dry land in the general vicinity. This may lead to loss of confidence for users in future who will question the value of the entry when they have better resolution mapping to work from. I guess this can be improved by manual geocoding but simplifying accurate loading and placing of images would be preferable. Any other views on this?

Alan Couch commented on "Habitat":
Thanks Bob - I am keen to do some more - I noticed today that the photos that I had previously seen on the page have now gone. Any idea why that would be? Some of my other photos have loaded recently and remain there (Callocephalon fimbriatum) for example. And yet others (Psudonaja textilis) seem to refuse to be picked up from Flickr.

Alan Couch commented on "Homonym Hunters":
Pseudechis - birds, fungi, plant and snake Genus? No, it seems to be some other problem under detail and names tabs on the page http://eol.org/pages/10579787/overview - among others.

Alan Couch commented on an older version of Crocodylus porosus (Estuarine Crocodile) - captive:
This looks like it is a 'gator rather than a Croc?

Hi Cyndy, Definitely Flickr for me - although I would prefer to load directly to EoL. I use a Nikon CoolpixP90. Not an SLR but very easy to use and still with a wide range of capabilities
