@Roderic Page: People would be pretty good at the coarse matching (shrimp-like, bird, mold, flower) so I'm not sure it is helpful to have computer vision do that part. Definitely an area for research.

@Jonathan Ray: Ah, we once had a Google Summer of Code student working on a way to do image finding using an image and it is a VERY VERY hard problem. LeafSnap.com is an app that does this for North American tree leaves; it is pretty specialized.

@Yan Wong: We reharvest from Wikimedia Commons about once a week, so the change should eventually propagate to us. If it doesn't, let us know.
-
Cyndy Parr commented on "EOL API Discussion Group":
@Jonathan Ray: I was sloppy, what I really meant was, how would you want to match the picture. Using your own identifier? Your own image URL? Either could be consistent with the approach that Nathan is talking about.
-
Cyndy Parr commented on "EOL API Discussion Group":
@Jonathan Ray: I think it is somewhat difficult to do this, as to use the data_objects method you need to know either the EOL DataObject version ID or a 16 character GUID, neither of which you can get without inspecting the XML for a page on which that photo appears. I could be wrong about this, but if I'm right this is a good suggestion for API improvement. How would you want to retrieve the photo?

Cyndy Parr commented on "Vashon Island Biodiversity":
@Tim DiChiara, PhD: Here's a possibility -- where the image is missing it may be that there's a better page for you to include. For example, I thought Pacific Geoduck should have an image. I found out by reading the page that many people (including some of our providers) confuse Panopea generosa with P. abrupta, which is extinct. So you'll want to swap that out in your collection.

Cyndy Parr commented on "Vashon Island Biodiversity":
Wow, EOL has photos of almost everything in your collection! Would be great to fill in the gaps. I'll go looking in Flickr to see if we can invite some of the missing ones.

@Roderic Page: Sounds like a good suggestion for the API improvement thread here: http://eol.org/forums/2 (for anybody else who happens to notice, we're testing a forum behind the scenes but would be happy to give you access, just ask)

@Yan Wong: Searching for Acanthodactylus bedriagae on the site finds this page: http://eol.org/pages/1057290/ . I tried the API call http://eol.org/api/search/1.0.json?q=Acanthodactylus+bedriagai and it seems to return the same thing. If there was a hiccup in the index it seems to have resolved itself.

From the source: This image comes from the book Naumann, Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas (Natural history of the birds of central Europe) of 1905 or his earlier works.

@Tiko Jr: Also, please do go to the Media tab and rate the images so the best ones appear first!

Cyndy Parr commented on "Opuntia brasiliensis (Willd.) Haw.":
@Tiko Jr: Hi, looks like you have some references to add. Please feel free to go to the Details tab and use "Add an article" to add some text to the page. Then you can list the references you used and they will also appear on the Literature tab.

Very interesting!

Seems likely that this name has been misspelled and should be G. bonplandi.
-
Cyndy Parr commented on "Characteristics":
Is G. bomplandi here a misspelling of G. bonplandi?
-
Cyndy Parr commented on "Groeberia":
Much better but still a little confusing. Looks like references both in the text box and the references box. Also, the subject seems to be "Behavior" but several aspects of biology are covered. Perhaps change subject to "Brief summary"?

Nick, I see you've been very busy collecting things on EOL! Welcome to our site. Let me know if you have any questions.
