Paddy Patterson commented on "Single cell radiolarian: Acrinophrys sol":

Actinophrys is not a radiolarian, and the illustration is misleading as arms taper from base to tip, the extrusomes (the bright spots) are virtually invisible at this level of resolution and it certainly does not measure 200 millimetres, the body is typically 50 microns. There is a mis-spelling (Acrinophrys) associated with this image.

Thanks, understood. Then this becomes an indexing exercise for Katja et al. to address.

Paddy Patterson commented on an older version of from culture:

@Martin Dohrmann: This image came from a reference culture of Proterospongia held by the American Type Culture Collection. What reason is there for concluding that it is not identified correctly? Recollect these taxa are polymorphic.

Paddy Patterson commented on an older version of Description of Fungi:

I am not sure how this description got to be in Bio*pedia (for which I am responsible), but I have now made some changes to it. If you wish you can register with starcentral.mbl.edu/biopedia and make further changes directly in that environment (please send an email to microscope@mbl.edu when you register). It is possible to generate alternative descriptions within Bio*edia or elsewhere, but I recommend that we work collaboratively to improve the text so that it best meets our needs.

Paddy Patterson commented on an older version of filaments:

@Priscila Chaverri: I am not sure how EOL put the image under Hypocreascea, in the original micro*scope site, it is under Zygnemaceae. You'll need to raise this with Cyndy Parr or Katja Schulz.

    Paddy Patterson commented on "Amoeba":

@Nathan Wilson: I don't really get what is going on here, but in reference to classifications, the ITIS classification in which I see this content is awful, as is COL, as is WoRMS. NCBI is the best of the bunch that EOL uses. Dan Lahr is pretty trustworthy on this front, and you can find his views at http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0022780

Paddy Patterson commented on "EOL Curators":

It's back to 'User beware!', and more pressure on primary data sources to mobilize their data so they are available to GBIF.

Paddy Patterson commented on "EOL Curators":

But, while GBIF might be of global scope, it frequently has so few data as to also provide a false understanding of known distribution. Better to educate users as to the risks. That said, sources that offer a global perspective should take priority over sources that have a geographically limited context.

First described from northern Europe, this pennate diatom is also known...

What does it mean that "we (?=EOL?) shall follow the system outlined in Hickman and Roberts (1994), but for some groups we shall incorporate the results of current research in our classification and discussion.

Oddly, in biopedia it is 'Hydra' - see http://starcentral.mbl.edu/biopedia/portal.php?pagetitle=classification; so what did you guys do on the import?

Paddy Patterson commented on "Vacuolaria Cienkowski, 1870":

http://eol.org/pages/92783/overview is of Vacuolaria, shows up on the dinoflagellate page, but is not a dinoflagellate (for a myriad of reasons).. Nor is a chromist.

How about chresonyms - Peranema trichophorum (Ehrenberg) Stein and Peranema tricophorum (Ehrenberg) Playfair show in the classification.

Why does this map show this thing in America, when GBIF doesn't have it there? (Indeed, why is this map here and not under the maps tab?)

why are there so many bird pictures showing when I go to animals, can't we just have one bird picture, or can't the animals page have the best picture from each of its taxonomic children?
