Description of Brevibacterium

Gram-positive, short, unbranching, rod-shaped aerobic bacteria formerly classified in the genus Bacterium. The genus has at times accommodated a broad range of organisms with very diverse chemical, biochemical and physiological features but many of these have since been moved to other genera (such as Arthrobacter, Aureobacterium, Corynebacterium, Curtobacterium, Exiguobacterium, Microbacterium, Nocardioides, Oerskovia and Rhodococcus). The genus was tightened around Brevibacterium linens and B. iodinum although several other species have since been assigned to the genus. Type species B. linens.
