The mammalian genus Hemicentetes has two species in it, the highland streaked tenrec (H. nigriceps), and the lowland streaked tenrec (H. semispinosus).  They are insectivores native to Madagascar.  Lowland streaked tenrecs live in rainforests on the east side of the island and highland streaked tenrecs are found in humid forest and plateaus in the central upland portion of Madagascar.  Hemicentetes is one of six species in subfamily Tenrecinae (family Tenrecidae) all of which superficially resemble the hedgehog.
