Reasons: Meesia hexasticha (Funck) Bruch is a little known species but indeed this species doesn't appear to be very common in the world. It is known only from Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Greenland according to the 2008 Liste des Bryophytes d'Europe posted on Tela Botanica. It is listed as extinct in Czechoslovakia (Vana 1992) and is listed as Endangered in the European Bryophyte Red Book (1995). In North America, only 5-6 occurrences are known, including a new discovery in northern Quebec (Jean Faubert, pers. comm. Jan2011).
Comments: Vana (1992) lists that destruction and loss of habitat, specifically peat meadows and peatland, has led to the extinction of certain bryophytes, including Meesia hexasticha, in Czechoslovakia.
Names and Taxonomy
Comments: Meesia hexasticha (Funck) Bruch is a recognized species, different from Meesia hexasticha sensu Grout. This latter species (sensu Grout) is synonymous with M. longiseta Hedw.
