Botryococcus braunii is a green alga found in (freshwater and brackish) lakes and ponds all over the world. Roundish cells clump together in microscopic colonies. The cells synthesise and accumulate lots of lipids causing great excitement in the biofuel industry. In fact it’s likely that lots of crude oil and fossil fuels used today were created by Botryococcus ancestors millions of years ago.
