Description of Chrysolepidomonas

Chrysophytes, single-celled flagellates, covered with characteristic canistrate and dendritic organic scales, free-swimming and with two unequal flagella; scales covering cell surface and at least in two species also both flagella (long flagellum also bearing tripartite tubular hairs); canistrate, or basket, scales with small spines, bumps or a fenestrate rim at distal surface; dendritic scales similar to canistrate scales at base, but on top of it with a tree-like outgrowth; cells spheroidal to elongate, not flattened, with a single chloroplast, containing an eyespot closely associated with the swollen region of the shorter flagellum; in one species also with a pyrenoid; 1-2, anterior contractile vacuoles; no food vacuoles and no phagotrophic feeding observed so far; scale formation performed within cisternae of the single, large Golgi body; flagellar apparatus architecture resembling that of Ochromonas -type flagellates; stomatocysts occasionally observed; two species in freshwater lakes and ponds, one species marine.
