Description of Guillardia

Cryptomonad flagellates, cells actively motile; slightly dorso-ventrally compressed, ovate in lateral view with both anterior and posterior rounded ends, elliptic in ventral view; a furrow is lacking, a tubular gullet extends posteriorly from the vestibulum. Periplast consists of an inner sheet and a surface component of large longitudinally oriented and irregular, crystalline plates. The periplastidial compartment contains a single chloroplast with a pyrenoid not traversed by thylakoids and a nucleomorph situated anterior to the pyrenoid. Chloroplast contains Cr-phycoerythrin 545. Marine.
