Range DescriptionThis species has an extensive distribution in shrublands in Australia. The nominate subspecies underwent a massive decline in the early 20th century that left it restricted to the Shark Bay region, Western Australia. Subspecies myall is moderately common in suitable habitat throughout its historical range in the Gawler Range, South Australia. Subspecies modestus, sensu stricto (Black 2010), is now extinct from its range in the south Northern Territory. The subspecies macrourus and inexpectatus are also now extinct (Black 2011a, b) .
