This species is easily identified by its hexagonal central, non-areolated area and the division of the valves into usually six sectors with alternating raised and depressed areas. Each of the raised sectors has a labiate process. The areolation is coarse and easily visible in water mounts. It is a cosmopolitan species and can be abundant in cold to temperate coastal waters.Trusted
