Description of Lepidochrysis

Biflagellate cells, solitary or embedded in the periphery of a common gelatinous matrix and forming spherical or irregularly shaped colonies; each cell covered with delicate scales consisting of an open framework of fibrils that form a hollow structure; 2 unequal flagella; chloroplast single; eyespot and pyrenoid present; stomatocysts unknown; monospecific genus, reported from saline water (e.g., Baltic Sea, salt marsh pools), but also growing in freshwater. Lepidochrysis glomerifera (Clarke et Pennick 1975) IkÉvalko, Kristiansen et Thomsen 1994.
