Description of Leptomonas

Kinetoplastid flagellates, one host, promastigote forms dominating the life cycle; amastigotes and cysts may also occur, parasites mainly of insects (Hemiptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Blattoidea, Lepidoptera, Siphonaptera, Anoplura) where they are found usually in the gut and associated organs, rarely (and doubtfully) of other invertebrates, present in some ciliate protozoa; type species, L. buetschlii Kent.
