Description of Micromonas

Extremely small flagellate with single emergent flagellum, single parietal chloroplast and single pyrenoid. Eyespot absent. Cells naked. The axoneme-containing part of the flagellum very short but the central pair of microtubules extends into a long thin whip. This is usually visible only in the electron microscope. Healthy cells swim quickly with the short stub-like part of the flagellum directed backwards. One species.
