Description of Ploeotia

Heteronematine euglenids, rigid cells with two unequal flagella, gliding with the anterior flagellum beating actively, ingestion apparatus well developed but not protrusible, mostly marine, now with many species; boundaries with Anisonema, Lentomonas, and Entosiphon are not clear and some species are difficult to assign to genus on the basis of light-microscopical characteristics alone. Type species: P. vitrea Dujardin, 1841.
