Toxicity

Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries produces the neurotoxin Domoic acid during growth limiting conditions. Known to cause Amnesic Shellfish poisoning (ASP). Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries was first identified as being toxic in 1987 when 150 people became ill and three died after eating blue mussels. This species has been found in UK coastal waters, however, no links have been made to such a toxicity as that described in Canada.
