Description of Trypanosoma

Kinetoplastid flagellates, trypanosomatids; two hosts, with a cycle of multplicative and developmental stages in the blood of vertebrates and another in the gut of leeches or arthropods; trypomastigote and epimastigote stages common to nearly all life-cycles, amastigotes more unusual and promastigotes rare; intracellular stages (usually amastigote) occur in some life-cycles; in all categories of vertebrates, type species Trypanosoma rotatorium Mayer 1843, a leech-transmitted trypanosome of frogs.
