Description of Astrephomene

Colony more or less spherical, hollow, with 16-128 (mostly 64) peripherally arranged cells; cells surrounded by individual extracellular matrix zone with tripartite boundary; boundaries of adjoining cells closely adhering; cells may be connected by cytoplasmic bridges; cells spherical to kidney-shaped, with 2 flagella of equal length; chloroplast cup-shaped; pyrenoid(s) occasionally visible in older cultures and in zygotes and gametes; eyespot large in anterior; contractile vacuoles 3-5; asexual reproduction by formation of daughter colony by all cells of colony; sexual reproduction isogamous or anisogamous, homothallic or heterothallic; mature zygote spherical, with thick brownish wall, sometimes undulate on the outide; germinating zygote usually producing a single swarmer which develops into a spherical colony as in asexual reproduction; nutrition photo- or chemo-organotrophic; rarely recorded genus, mainly from temporary rainwater pools rich in organic matter.
