Solitary cells appear without lorica, ovoid or spherical, most species sedentary, attached to substratum by a pedicel, but some species free-swimming; 2-8 contractile vacuoles present in freshwater species, in freshwater, brackish and marine habitats; single-celled stages of Codonosiga are indistinguishable from species of Monosiga.
