Description of Khawkinea

Euglenid flagellate, colourless, osmotrophic, fusiform or elongated, unflattened cells; flagella as Euglena; canal opening subapical; eyespot and flagellar swelling present; euglenoid movement pronounced; about 10 species, fresh-water, widespread, some recorded as parasitic in fresh-water animals (flatworms, copepods, annelids); almost certainly derived from species of Euglena by loss of chloroplasts (Pringsheim 1956, 1963); type species: K. quartana µmoroff) Jahn & McKibbben, 1937.
