P. minimum is an armored, marine, planktonic, bloom-forming dinoflagellate species. It is a toxic, cosmopolitan species common in cold temperate brackish waters to tropical regions. Cell shape is triangular to oval-round including intermediate forms; cell size is small, 15-20 µm long, and 13-17 µm wide; valves flattened and covered by short spines and trichocyst pores; on the right valve from a V-shaped depression two flagella emerge; cells active swimmers; apical view with species specific ornamentations: apical spines, collar, and a forked tooth.
