Description of Beggiatoa alba

Type species of the genus, usually regarded as the sole species but molecular evidence suggest that there may be considerable diversity within the genus. There is also morphological diversity, with various sizes of filaments, the largest being about 200 microns in diameter. Initially isolated from freshwater, not autotrophic.
