Small, compact, strongly bristled flies, 2-5 mm long; body usually dull gray, with brown markings; legs stout, often with banded tibiae; wing with few to many brownish spots, always darkened around subcostal break in Nearctic species. (McAlpine 1987, Papp 1998)
