Slender brown to blackish flies, sometimes variegated with shades of yellow or orange, rather dull, often with a pruinose scutal pattern. Wing hyaline, yellowish or brownish, without a sharply defined color pattern. Bristles usually reduced in number and length, but often rather stout and placed on wart-like bases. Length 7.0-12.0 mm in Nearctic species. (Steyskal 1987)
