Description of Urotricha lagenula

Prostomatid ciliate, 45 micrometres. Flask-shaped or pyriform, narrow in front, rounded posteriorly, often with a yellowish coloration. Mouth apical, round, over a thick-walled cytopharynx supported by nematodesmata. At posterior extremity, a tuft of 3 or 4 long caudal cilia. Somatic ciliation uniform, denser and shorter anteriorly, longer and sparser in the rear. Macronucleus large, spherical, slightly subcentral; posterior contractile vacuole. Swims quickly, with orbital, rotating movement, with sudden erratic shifts in direction. Freshwater, in ponds and marshes
