The species is found in the lowlands of Eastern Venezuela, Trinidad and the Guyanas, and in Northern Brazil (Fretey et al. 1977, Pritchard & Trebbau 1984, Rueda-Almanacid et al. 2007).

The animal is no longer extinct. As of 2009 on the IUCN Red List Status for the Cuora yunnanensis the animal is Critically Endangered.
