Brief Summary

Read full entry

Mormotomyia is a genus of Diptera (flies) that contains one species, M. hirsute.  It is the only genus in family Mormotomyiidae.  It has been found in only one location in Eastern Kenya, in a cave-like cleft in a rock at the apex of Ukasi Hill.  A specialized, trogolomorphic species, M. hirsute has been difficult to place among other dipteran species.  A finding of multiple specimen in 2010 has opened up new possibilites for understanding this very rare, monotypic genus.
