LastRanger commented on "Apalone ferox SCHNEIDER 1783":

We saw a large (about 12 in. Long) soft-shelled turtle crossing the road here in Homosassa, Fl. And this appears to be very similar to Amyda (Apalone) ferox except the turtle we saw was very dark, almost black. If anyone can help us identify the species we would be very grateful . We moved the turtle off the road, making sure it was still facing the same direction. As soon as the turtle was sure we weren't going to eat him (?) he made a bee line for a wooded area that was in the direction he was originally going. We were surprised how fast he could move. As I said he was very dark, almost black on the shell and the head, legs and tail. The nostril was like a tube (snorkel ?). The texture of the shell very leathery. He was obviously an aquatic turtle but we didn't know of any bodies of water in the area. LastRanger
