Description of Vampyrella

Amoeboid cells, mostly 30 - 100 microns long, with numerous fine (filose), clear, pseudopodia extending from the periphery of an irregular cell body. Cytoplasm granular and often with orange/red globules . Typically found in freshwater ponds on green algae where they feed on the intracellular contents of these algal cells after cutting a hole in the cell wall and entering the algal cell; type species Vampyrella lateritia.
