Overview

Distribution

Range Description

This species is found in the lowlands (below 400 m asl) of western Ecuador. A juvenile specimen purchased near Iquitos, Peru suggests the species may be more widely distributed (Voss and da Silva, 2001).

Habitat and Ecology
This species is poorly known. Some field observations of Coendou ichillus are available. An adult female porcupine was briefly observed in the night as it ate ripe bananas suspended by a cord from the rafters of a building surrounded by gardens and secondary vegetation. Another adult was observed at night in adjacent primary floodplain forest, where it was perched on a liana about 8 m above the ground. At least two individuals were said by lodge employees to inhabit holes in hollow palm trunks that were used as upright supports for the kitchen and other buildings (Voss and da Silva, 2001).
